Bicycle camping in Taiwan, Day 4: Binmao to Guanshan.

IMG_5971On the fourth day cycling in Taiwan we’d cycle out of Binmao and head north along the coast to Taitung and inland along the rift valley as far as Guanshan. A fairly flat and easy cycle past rice paddies and palm trees in one of the most famous of Taiwan’s indigenous regions. Starting out dry and finishing off in the pouring rain.

Bicycle camping in Taiwan, Day 3: Pingtung County to Minmao

IMG_5823Tuesday was the third day of our Taiwan cycling adventure. This would take us 400 meters high up into the mountains then right back down to sea level before cycling north along the coast and up a river valley to camp in a local hot spring. A lot of climbing and a good distance covered.

Bicycle Camping in Taiwan, Day 2: Fengang to Pingtung County

IMG_5705On our second day of cycling we’d travel further down the west coast of the island to the southernmost tip and overland to the west coast at Pingtung county. This would be a long hard ride over some tough terrain to make up for time lost on the first day. It also allowed us to take in some fantastic views of the Taiwan countryside from seaside towns to blustery cliffs and jungle with a good climb at the end. Hard work, but well worth it.

Bicycle Camping in Taiwan, Day 1: Koahsuing to Fengang

mmexport1454593313842The first day proper of our bicycle camping adventure in Taiwan would take us from Koahsuing to Fengang along the west coast. A tough start with a couple of flat tires. This turned to be the coldest day in Taiwan in over 70 years and we covered just over 78km, before having to stop due to bad light.

Bicycle Camping in Taiwan

Bullet train from Taipei to Kaohs

Bullet train from Taipei to Kaohsiung

At the end of January this year I decided to take well deserved break. A cycling and camping holiday around the island of Taiwan with my good friend Ning. Our journey would take us across and up the east coast of the island covering over 500km in a total of seven days.  We’d experience some fantastic scenery and have a unique perspective of one of the most friendly and diverse parts of east Asia. From the city, to the coast, to the jungle and mountains. Cycling Taiwan wasn’t without it’s challenges, but overall it was a very enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

Ultra Trail Hong Kong 100

12778987_227304510948199_4246501313237637228_oThis was  monster of a race. 106km with a total ascent of 4,500 meters over some brutal trail. Not for the faint hearted and a good bit harder that anything I’d previously ran. The race took almost 21 hours to complete and left me shattered but happy to have finished what would be only my second 100k trail race.

Buntington 10 End of Season Run

bunt cropAt the end of 2015 I was happy to run in the Buntingford 10, a traditional race organized by the Royston running club in the English county of Hertfordshire. It was perfect conditions for running and a great way to end the year in the beautiful English countryside. It was more or less up and down all the way, all 10 miles of it. This is a bit of a funny distance for me and I’ve never run a 10 miler competitively but the race turned out well. Although I was suffering from a mild stomach bug and cramped up a bit around my tummy, I still managed to pull off a half-decent time. A respectable 1 hour 8 minutes and 34 seconds.
